The Art of Personal Storytelling

Stories are what make us human. Whether you want to tell better stories at a party, try public storytelling, write a memoir, or learn more about yourself, this class will help you turn moments from your life into stories that draw people in.

Across five weeks, you’ll find inspiration in everyday experiences, explore what makes a story work, and develop a short personal story in your own voice. Learn how to create an engaging opening, bring scenes to life, and give your story a satisfying ending. Along the way, you’ll share ideas and drafts, exchange feedback with classmates, and have time to work with the instructor.

Between classes, you’ll explore examples from other storytellers and work on your own writing. The course wraps up with students sharing their finished stories aloud, plus resources for anyone interested in taking the next step onto a stage or into print.

About the Instructor:  Justice Morath is a professor of psychology who found his creative outlet through storytelling back in 2015 when he signed up on a whim to perform at The Bee story slam even though he had never even been to such an event. He has since told his stories and performed on dozens of stages across the country.   Along with teaching college, he has taught many types of writing workshops for the public.  He is a former Associate Director of the SLCC Community Writing Center, won the Wasatch Iron Pen twice in the adult non-fiction category, is a speaker coach for TEDxSaltLakeCity, and occasionally even performs in cabarets.
